On the remote West Coast of the South Island is a family with three daughters, all in their teens. “The girls enjoy making coffee – it’s a bit of a ritual,” says Katie Scott of Sticks+Stones Design. “And my client loves to cook, but doesn’t like the mess.” As part of an extensive renovation and a new addition, the family wanted a light, open space with a warm, inviting feel.
“We used a very simple palette of light oak and natural stone elements, together with off-white cabinetry, complemented by textured, reeded panelling and lots of subtle feature lighting. We also added a skylight to bring in natural light.”
A pocket door in the same oak finish hides a scullery, which holds the all-important coffee station, and a large arch over the bar area gives the space flow and personality.
