“Quality, longevity and craftsmanship.” These are the attributes of Wilson & Dorset sheepskins that owner Amanda Dorset is most proud of. “We certainly believe luxury is the ability to stop, relax and breathe in and just take a moment to yourself. It’s almost like a nostalgia for a time when life was slower, and we were more connected to each other and to ourselves.”
The cosy, textural range of Wilson & Dorset sheepskin beanbags, cushions and rugs have a retro appeal, she says, that draws people in. “People are extremely comfortable with sheepskin; they just instantly understand it and love it. Everyone loves lounging on our Sheepskin Rugs or our Shaggy Bean Bags because you’re interacting with this very tactile fibre.”
There are also so many benefits to using wool products in homes, from its hypoallergenic and breathable properties to fire resistance and longevity. From a wider environmental point of view, it’s also biodegradable and easily renewable.
Wilson & Dorset has captured that old-school connection to sheepskins with a contemporary, minimal design and soothing colours that are inspired by nature. It’s a successful approach that has seen the company grow in recent years, from its first store in Wānaka to adding stores in Arrowtown and the Australian holiday destination Bowral, outside Sydney. “We’ve been really excited to see New Zealand sheepskin do well,” says Amanda. “We are extremely passionate about our product – born out of nature, it’s a product that lasts a lifetime.”
Mindfulness is in every aspect of the Wilson & Dorset approach. New products are currently in the pipeline, and the company is constantly working with partners and growers to ensure its sheepskins are responsibly sourced. It is also working on creating a more eco-friendly beanbag fill. Being an inclusive workplace is hugely important, and Amanda says its pilot programme employing people with intellectual disabilities has been positive and enriching for the culture of the company.
