Go your own way

Go your own way

Home ownership isn’t one-size-fits-all. Dean McGuigan of Golden Homes explains

For many people, the dream of owning a home can feel like it follows a very specific path: save a deposit, find a partner, buy a house and settle down.

But the reality is that home ownership looks very different today, and that’s a positive thing.

Across New Zealand, more people are finding creative and practical ways to enter the property market. Some are buying with partners, while others are purchasing with siblings, parents, friends or as individuals. There is no single “right” way to get onto the property ladder, and understanding the options available can open doors that many people never realised existed.

One of the biggest misconceptions about home ownership is that you have to do it alone or wait until your circumstances fit a traditional mould. In reality, there are a variety of ownership structures, financing solutions and building opportunities that can help make property ownership more achievable.

For some, purchasing a new home with family members creates a pathway that may not have been possible on their own. Others are choosing to build their own investment portfolios, taking control of their financial future and creating long- term security. The common thread is that people are exploring solutions that suit their individual goals and circumstances.

At Golden Homes Canterbury, we believe that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools people can have when making property decisions. That’s why we’re passionate about helping more people understand the pathways available to them and giving them the confidence to take the next step.

As part of this commitment, we’ve launched a series of free educational events designed to make property ownership and investment more accessible and less intimidating. Events such as New Home for Her and Muffins & Mortgages provide a relaxed, welcoming environment where attendees can learn from industry professionals and ask questions without pressure.

The sessions cover a range of topics, including buying a first home, financing a new build, understanding legal requirements and exploring property investment opportunities. Expert panels have included mortgage brokers, lawyers and property professionals who share practical advice and real-world insights.

Our first female-directed event, held in mid-June, attracted a fantastic turnout and highlighted the strong appetite for education, support and connection within the community. The positive feedback reinforced our belief that when people are equipped with the right information, they feel more confident making decisions about their future.

While some of the latest events have been specifically designed to support women who may be navigating home ownership or investment independently for the first time, the broader message remains the same: property ownership is achievable for more people than they often realise.

Home ownership doesn’t have to be a solo journey – and there are more pathways to success than ever before.
