The merino dream
After a good night’s sleep? Think merino, says David Henderson of Dreamwool.
Dreamwool has been handcrafting mattresses in Christchurch for nearly a hundred years. Director and designer David Henderson’s family has owned the business for a good part of that history, taking it over in the early 1970s.
Since then, there have been great strides in the technology and materials that go into producing the ideal mattress, but the beneficial properties of merino wool have stood the test of time.
“We love merino wool because of its soft, luxurious feel, superior fibre density, greater insulation and its ability to hold its shape compared to coarser wools,” says David. “The generous layers of 100 per cent pure merino wool in our mattresses give our customers the very best in comfort and temperature control.”
There are many options when it comes to a Dreamwool bed. But the common factor is the generous layering of New Zealand merino wool in its mattresses.
As a premium bed manufacturer, Dreamwool is dedicated to using only the most sustainable merino sourced from South Island high country stations. Merino wool actively supports better sleep, thanks to its natural thermos-regulating, moisture- wicking and hypoallergenic properties. This versatile fibre maintains optimal body temperature by keeping you warm in cooler conditions and cool when it’s warm. With its softness and breathability, says David, merino wool delivers the ultimate comfort for deep, restful sleep year-round.
As a specialist company, Dreamwool beds are made to order, with around 500 luxury, handcrafted merino wool mattresses made each year.
“There are two options in terms of mattresses,” says David: latex or pocket spring.
Latex provides a resilient, contouring feel that aligns easily with your body’s shape. Custom comfort levels are achieved by adjusting the density of the latex. The addition of charcoal-infused latex enhances breathability, temperature regulation and freshness. Pocket springs offer support with individual European-made coils that contour to your body’s profile and minimise partner disturbance. Comfort levels are customised by using different wire gauges, ensuring tailored support without sacrificing plush comfort layers. Both, of course, feature the cosy layers of fine merino to ensure a luxurious sleep.
