What’s happening in your industry?
Sustainability is everywhere right now. Homeowners have more access to information than ever, and they’re using it to make smarter choices about the brands they trust. They want to see that the company they’re supporting cares about the environment, the community and its people. That’s what “Steel Made Better” is all about. At ColorCote, we don’t just make steel better by coating it in paint; we make steel better by reducing our environmental footprint, backing up our claims with industry accreditations, and creating a workplace where people can thrive. For us, sustainability isn’t just about the product; it’s about continuing the legacy of the business for another century and striving for better for the people and customers we serve.

Why is sustainability so important?
The building industry has a significant role to play in reducing carbon emissions so New Zealand can meet its Paris Agreement commitments, in which we’ve pledged to cut emissions by 51-55 per cent below 2005 levels by 2035 and to reach net zero (excluding biogenic methane) by 2050. Homeowners and specifiers want their choices to matter, not just for their homes, but for the planet. Talking about sustainability is easy; proving it is hard. That’s why we’re proud to be transparent about the steps we’re taking, with recognised accreditations like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and NZGBC certifications.

How have you improved your product?
Doing better is a journey. Back in 2021, when our old paint line ovens were nearing the end of their life, we decided to invest in something better. By 2023, we started installing infrared (IR) ovens – a huge step forward. Unlike traditional gas ovens, IR ovens heat up fast and switch off when they’re not needed. That change alone reduced CO2 emissions from our paint line ovens by an average of 59 per cent per tonne of steel painted. In addition, our water-based coatings not only offer a more sustainable solution but a durable one. Having a product that arrives on time, in full and ready to install without damage plays a big part in ensuring deadlines are met and budgets are adhered to.

What does all this mean for homeowners?
Choosing ColorCote means you don’t have to compromise. You can pick a roof that suits your style and your values. Our products are built to handle Aotearoa’s harsh and varied conditions, and they’re backed by a brand that’s committed to doing better. And with warranties ranging from 30 to 50 years, homeowners can feel confident their investment will last.
