Tiles
Aureo Tondin Soares, manager of Roma Tiling, says homeowners are choosing tiles that age gracefully.
What’s the latest tile trend?
One of the strongest trends we are seeing across New Zealand is a move towards timeless tile selections. Neutral palettes, soft textures and classic shapes will remain relevant for decades. Rather than following fast-changing design fads, clients are prioritising durability, longevity and a cohesive aesthetic that reflects their identity. At Roma Tiling, we really appreciate this shift because tiles are a long-lasting investment in any home. When clients choose classic materials, they are ensuring that their spaces remain beautiful, functional and easy to maintain for many years.
Why is this becoming popular?
It’s driven by a combination of factors: increased awareness of sustainability, the rising cost of renovations and a desire for interiors that feel calm and elevated without overwhelming the senses. Timeless tiles offer versatility: they complement different decor styles and allow homeowners to refresh accents like vanities, tapware, paint or lighting without needing to replace the entire tiled area.
How should we do it?
The ideal approach is to use neutral, elegant tiles for all fixed surfaces, especially bathrooms, laundries and kitchens – the spaces where durability matters most. These tiles create a clean canvas, while colour and personality can be introduced. Most of our current bathroom projects highlight this direction. Clients are selecting light tones, stone-look tiles and subtle textures to create calm, spa-like environments. In kitchens, we are installing a growing number of subway splashbacks in different laying patterns – vertical, stacked, herringbone – as well as colourful handmade-style tiles that add character without overwhelming. KitKat mosaics also continue to be extremely popular for feature walls and refined accents. Timeless does not mean boring. It means intentional.
And can you help?
At Roma Tiling, our focus is always on guiding clients toward choices that will stand the test of time, both aesthetically and functionally. Quality installation and personalised service are at the heart of every project we deliver.
