Wild ideas

A fresh approach in landscape design by Studio Wren caters to today’s more relaxed way of living.

Rachael Farthing of Studio Wren Landscape Design is bringing some fresh concepts to the gardens and backyards of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Renowned as the Garden City of New Zealand, Christchurch’s English heritage has often been reflected in a formal, classic style, characterised by straight lines, symmetrical hedges and clipped topiaries. Today, however, Rachael is seeing more homeowners wanting to move on from the gardens of the past.

Our growing cities, changing climate and a more informal approach to living and entertaining mean we’re rethinking the way we use our outdoor spaces.

“My design approach centres around a more eclectic or naturalist style,” says Rachael. Options such as perennials, natives, organic shapes and textural materials all add to a welcoming and interesting feel and are much more appropriate for our part of the world. “Everyone requests a low-maintenance garden, for example,” says Rachael. “The more a plant suits the conditions, the better it will thrive and the less maintenance it will need.”

This more casual style is still very carefully planned and structured, she says, with every aspect considered from sunlight and privacy to the size and condition of the site and any existing features. “I’m very interested in the way a home’s architecture, interiors and landscape work harmoniously as a whole.”

Rachael tailors every design to her clients’ personalities, lifestyles and homes, and can assist in the practicalities of bringing her designs to reality. “The best landscaping outcomes come from strong collaboration and communication. I work closely with clients, guiding them from the first concepts through consenting and procurement and to the installation stage.”

Ōtautahi is not the only location enjoying the Studio Wren touch – Rachael currently has projects underway all over the country, including Auckland and Wellington, as she offers both digital and in-person consultations. The process for any project, big or small, is fully explained on the Studio Wren website, alongside an inspirational gallery.
