It’s the perfect time of year to elevate your outdoor space. Goom Landscapes and Compass Pools Christchurch team up to show us how to create multiple low maintenance areas and what to consider when adding a pool to your garden.

Goom’s top tips when considering a pool

Positioning
Consider the best fit for your garden’s dimensions, remembering to factor in setbacks and other zoning and building restrictions.

Size
Pool size is typically a very personal choice. If you want to eliminate a lawn, then you can go large, or keep it small to retain the functionality of other parts of your garden.

Safety
Safety is the number one concern for pool owners. Consider how you are going to properly enclose and supervise the pool. There are multiple options for fencing, so you’ll want to invest where you get the maximum impact.

Height differences
Try and utilise height differences to give a pleasant outlook to your pool. Different levels can give you the freedom to play around with seating and eating areas.

Choosing a contractor
When considering contractors, get referrals from friends and neighbours and talk to those with expertise in both landscaping and pools. At Goom Landscapes, the team has over 40 years of experience in the landscaping industry. Compass Pools Christchurch is part of the Goom Group and famous for its self-cleaning system.

With summer just around the corner, many of us are turning our attention to our gardens. And that means creating a space that works for us. For one Christchurch family, that meant meeting their growing children’s needs for home-based fun and a space to hang out with friends. The parents were also after a functional entertaining space and a low maintenance garden.

The family enlisted the help of Goom Landscapes to create a contemporary garden which delivers a big hit of happiness at the same time as a hefty dose of safety and secluded space. The paved pool area and outdoor dining spaces are made for living and entertaining outdoors, while the planting and fencing secure a timeless look.

“The family saw the value in adding a pool,” says Jessica Staples, landscape architect at Goom Landscapes. “The family’s children are getting older, and it’s a great way to provide them with a space to call home.”

This complete outdoor renovation centred around the creation of a new pool, as well as providing a boat park area at the front of the property and extensive decking, steps, pavers, and planting.

"The planting beds were kept to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres,” says Jessica. “We also future-proofed the planting in an area of the property where a spa pool may go. This is a great idea and means the owners won’t need to uproot trees as and when they do install the spa pool.”

The plaster block wall is also an ingenious way of providing privacy between the house and the sleepout, as well as allocating a spot for the barbecue to sit behind. It’s a great way to multi-purpose a feature, and it shows the thought and expertise that has gone into this design.

Goom’s full-service approach marries landscape architecture and construction, garden design and installation, pool design, build and renovation. It’s no wonder this company has won over 20 landscape design and construction gold medals.

“We take pride in crafting landscapes that become your own slice of heaven,” says Tim Goom, director and designer at Goom Landscapes. “With the acquisition of Compass Pools Christchurch in 2019, we are passionate about creating the perfect pool and surrounding areas for the specific needs of our customers.”

For this Christchurch family, the significant upgrade has totally transformed the garden, and they couldn’t be happier.
