With a reputation for unparalleled creativity and effortless style, interior designer Fiona Renton of Sandalwood Design shares her secrets to success.

Her life’s passion, Fiona Renton’s flair for colour and texture has become a vocation. ‘The moment I began my training, and as I began to hone my craft, it felt like I had “arrived”: finally, I’d found what really made me tick.’
Proud to continue the company’s 35-year legacy in Christchurch, Fiona bought Sandalwood Design ten years ago. Testament to the stunning results she produces with her sensitive and thorough approach, Fiona’s many clients span generations.
Fiona’s deep love of colour and natural textures, together with her skill for assimilating all the elements to create a cohesive whole, are what continue to drive her day in day out. ‘I love the diversity this job offers’, Fiona says. Every project is unique, keeping things fresh and interesting for both herself and her clients.

Fiona’s passion for design is poured into each project. From designing bespoke pieces of furniture, to selecting colour palettes, wall coverings, flooring or window treatments, to deciding on furniture placement, for a single room or whole house, Fiona relishes drawing on her arsenal of skills, together with the expertise of reputable contractors, to produce impeccable results.
‘As I’m often involved right from the get-go, liaising with the client, other designers, architects and craftspeople, I like to completely immerse myself in every aspect in order to achieve the very best finish.’
Forging close relationships with her clients is another aspect Fiona thoroughly enjoys. ‘Building trust is vital as it gives the clients confidence in the process and allows me to do what I do best.’ And, although Fiona has a distinct personal style that draws on high quality natural materials, she works tirelessly to tailor each look according to the specific needs and personal style of each client.
Designing interiors is like telling a story – a story of the inhabitants, Fiona shares. And, like any good story, it ought to convey the owners’ personalities. Listening carefully to their wants and needs is the key to success.
‘After all, I’m just a visitor in their home, and they have it for life.’
