A fresh take on first homes
Robin Curtis of Health Based Building shares how partnering with Nest Homes is helping to make houses that focus on human health and the environment an affordable option for first home buyers.
Tasked with designing an affordable home for their daughter, Jock and Jackie Davey, owners of Nest Homes, set about looking for alternatives. With their daughter a first-home buyer, Jock knew the solution needed to be affordable and of a standard higher than most commonly used building materials would provide. He was looking for a new mix of materials that supported sustainable development to embed human health, material health, and environmental health as the first principles in the design and aimed to find products that would not require energy sapping mechanical ventilation systems or wraps and toxic foams that impact the environment. He needed to look no further than Designex in Christchurch where he met the Health Based Building team, a company supplying a fully developed range of materials and building systems that ticked all the boxes, including downstream waste management.
In terms of our physical and material health, managing air quality and moisture levels is critical to maintaining a safe environment. All Nest Homes begin with walls constructed using breathable, Foreverbreathe Wall Systems. Air tightness and vapour permeability work in harmony to remove moisture and increase air quality without the need for energy sapping ventilation systems.
The construction industry creates an enormous amount of waste. In the home pictured, built by Nest Homes in Mangakino, the company demonstrates how things can be done differently, without releasing toxic substances into our environment. From the foundation to the insulation, interior paints, exterior cladding, and structural timber, a Nest Home focuses on air tightness with embedded vapour permeability, air quality, human health, material health, financial health, and environmental health.
Nest Homes come with measurable performance indicators, allowing you to monitor overall performance and internal environmental health. Jock believes that no one buys an appliance without knowing how it performs so why take a gamble on the investment of a lifetime? Since building the Mangakino home, Nest Homes has gone from strength to strength with additional performance benefits coming via the association with the team at Health Based Building.
