Work & play

Creating specialised zones for work and play helps keep the lines from blurring in the sand.

As our inner and outer lives become more and more integrated, so too do our homes – places where we not only prepare for and complete our days, but where we live, grow, work and play. And, as our homes become more flexible, there are some very simple ways we can kit them out to suit our changing needs.

Rooms can perform dual functions or be specifically designed to cater to a particular task. In the first instance, guest rooms that are only used a couple of times a year can be designed to be used on a more regular basis to get the maximum benefit for the home's full-time occupants.
A guest room can double as a home office, craft workshop or music studio by simply investing in a good sofa bed that can fold up to allow space for other pursuits. And, if funds allow, you can have custom-made, built-in furniture designed especially to fit the space and your unique requirements.

Worktime
As workplaces become more flexible in allowing employees to work from home, clear boundaries between home life and work will help keep you on track, while ensuring you have the creature comforts that make working from home that much more enjoyable. Even if you don’t work from home, a dedicated area for writing can become a place for quiet contemplation or a study nook for teenagers.
Ensure you have ample storage so that you can keep your desktop clutter-free, and enough natural light and ventilation to keep your head clear. Introducing plants helps keep the air free of toxins produced by computers and brings life to your work zone. Inject some fun and creativity with artwork on the walls, and invigorate your senses by burning a beautiful scented candle.

Playtime
Spare rooms or other underutilised spaces within the home can be transformed to cater for your hobbies and interests. By installing black-out blinds and painting the walls a dark colour, you can easily transform any enclosed space into a media room where you can indulge in movie marathons any time of the day. While cleverly designed storage – either bespoke solutions handmade by a local joiner, or modular stand-alone or wall-mounted systems – allows you to convert dead space into a creative hub for musicians and craft enthusiasts, or into a reflective zone for meditation yogis.
Whatever your passions or pursuits, think outside the box and tailor your home to fit your life.
